Cancer. It is a word that makes every single one of our hearts just sink. I know we have all had experiences with cancer… whether it be personally or through a loved one. I watched my grandmother slowly wither away from cancer, my dad’s best friend just lost his battle with cancer. It hurts to let anyone we love pass on, but I have been fortunate in my experiences with cancer that most have lived full lives. They have lived to see children and grand children be born, the new generation of their families begin and flourish.
But this year, I have been experiencing cancer in a new light. Cancer came knocking on the door to someone very close to me. My dear friend’s husband was diagnosed with cancer after nearly six weeks without a single answer. Driving 5+ hours every single week and having a team of six doctors across six different departments work on a diagnosis. Finally, he was diagnosed with lymphoma. And the news has been devastating to all in our small community. He is a father of three young children, a loving husband, and a hard worker in the prime of his life.
Now instead of the 5+ hour drive, it is a 2 hour drive to chemotherapy every three weeks. Throughout this whole process, there have surely been many hours put into traveling, finding answers, and finally seeking the cure. It has been frustrating at times, there have been times when both have felt broken… But despite the struggles, the two have maintained an unbelievably positive outlook and continue to find strength in our Lord. It is because of the amazing strength and ever-positive attitude of these two, that I will walk along side my dear friend and her husband at this year’s local Relay for Life.
This year will be my first ever Relay For Life. I have donated previously but have never participated. I am looking forward to seeing, hearing, and being inspired by the many stories of success, crying tears with the ones who have lost their battle, and walking alongside of many other men and women who all have a passion for finding a cure. I will also walk to let those who battle with cancer KNOW that they are not alone. No one fights alone.
I am sure you have a similar story… I am sure we all do. I am sure we could come up with a list a names of people who have suffered through the battle. The list would be long. Cancer affects us all. Cancer is devistating, but there are miracles. Through organizations like the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life, individuals who are fighting cancer are given hope.
And this is why I am asking for donations… Because those who are fighting the fight need to know they are not alone. Because out of every dollar raised through Relay for Life, 80 cents goes directly towards helping someone in the battle with cancer. It is my hope that through organizations like the American Cancer Society, someday we will experience a world where cancer no longer devastates us. Where cancer no longer takes the ones we love, where we no longer have to watch those we love suffer.
Please consider supporting the Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. More importantly, please consider supporting those who are currently fighting the battle. If God is speaking to your heart, feel free to make a donation to Relay for Life by clicking the photo above.
As a further fundraiser and reminder to all around us that No One Fights Alone, we have made headbands with the motto. You can use the Buy Now link on the right sidebar. Please note that they will ship within 2-3 weeks, we as a team will be making them all by hand. And of course, all proceeds sold from the headbands will be going to Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.
Have you ever participated in Relay for Life?
Hey! I would love to buy a headband but I can’t figure out how too. I clicked on the link to add it to bag and it took me to your relay page. But on that page I see no where to purchase it. Am I overlooking something?
NM – saw the shopping bag was hidden at the bottom of the page behind a pop up. 🙂
